چکیده

As part of its nonprofit mission, ETS conducts and disseminates the results of research to advance quality and equity in education and assessment for the benefit of ETS' constituents and the field ETS Research Memorandums provide limited dissemination of ETS research. Abstract This paper describes research on stereotype threat by my colleagues and me. One aim was to document its effects on operational tests in high-stakes settings. The second was to investigate possible changes in the tests that might minimize any effects of stereotype threat. Research by others on operational tests in these same kinds of settings is also described. Methodological issues in this research and alternative approaches to investigating stereotype threat are discussed.

When avoiding failure improves performance: Stereotype threat and the impact of performance goals

We examined the impact of inducing performance-avoidance and approach goals (versus no goal) on women’s math performance in stereotype threatening versus nonthreatening situations. Two experiments showed that inducing either stereotype threat (versus nothreat) or a performance-avoidance goal (versus no goal) alone led to decreased math performance. However, inducing both stereotype threat and a...

The roots of stereotype threat: when automatic associations disrupt girls' math performance.

Although stereotype awareness is a prerequisite for stereotype threat effects (Steele & Aronson, 1995), research showed girls' deficit under stereotype threat before the emergence of math-gender stereotype awareness, and in the absence of stereotype endorsement. In a study including 240 six-year-old children, this paradox was addressed by testing whether automatic associations trigger stereotyp...

Stigma and Glucose Levels: Testing Ego Depletion and Arousal Explanations of Stereotype Threat Effects

Stereotype threat research shows that when stigmatized group membership is made salient, group members' cognitive performance is lowered; however, the mechanism through which this effect operates is not well understood. This study tests between arousal and ego depletion accounts of stereotype threat by examining whether stereotype threat effects are mitigated or exacerbated by increasing glucos...

Understanding the Stereotype Threat Effect With “Culture-Free” Tests: An Examination of its Mediators and Measurement

This experiment examined the mediation of the stereotype threat effect and explored the relationship of 2 different types of stereotype threat: stereotype threat–specific (threat that results specifically from the testing environment) and stereotype threat–general (a global sense of threat that individuals carry across situations) on Raven Advanced Progressive Matrices test performance. As pred...

Rising to the threat: Reducing stereotype threat by reframing the threat as a challenge

In two experiments, we found that the performance-inhibiting consequences of stereotype threat were eliminated when the threat was subtly reframed as a challenge. In Experiment 1, Black school children in North Carolina completed a 10-itemmathematics test. Participants who reported their race before taking the test performed more poorly than participants who reported their race after completing...
